Visual Inspection (VT)

Visual inspection is the process of examination and evaluation of objects by use of the human sense of sight and may be aided by mechanical tools, measuring instruments, magnifiers or video borescopes.

This method is used to inspect a wide variety of products including castings, forgings, machined parts and welds.

Visual examination is always performed first before other NDT methods are used to determine necessity and suitability of a proposed testing procedure.

NDT is an essential part of any project in modern industry.

Visual Testing requires:

  • Either direct line-of-sight or remote visual contact with the area to be inspected and adequate lighting.
  • A thorough knowledge of the inherent nature and origin of discontinuities and possible defects within the given specimen.
  • Familiarity with the codes and specifications governing the inspection process.
